AMD Stock Surges Following Leaked Ryzen AI 300 Details

On Friday, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) shares jumped amid leaked information on the Ryzen AI 300, formerly named Strix Point.

The Silicon Valley tech company’s stock advanced 3.70% to $166.36 apiece on May 24, followed by a 0.55% after-hours gain. Moreover, industry watchers project a 2.35% gain to $170.27 per share on the coming trading day.

In an earlier reveal, AMD said Ryzen AI 300 utilizes a new mobile architecture with updated RDNA 3.5 graphics and Zen 5 cores. Furthermore, it hosts a neural processing unit, making it optimal for AI PCs like the new Microsoft Copilot+.

Blender Open Data benchmarked an early prototype of the new chip, granting it an overall score of 270.92 points. This indicates that the mobile chipset has superior computing power to the Ryzen 7 7700X and 7800X3D desktop processors.

Rumors suggest that the Ryzen AI 9 HX 170 will be the top-end of the series, featuring 12 cores, 24 threads, and 77 TOPS. It was reportedly built to compete with the fastest SoC silicon processors, including Apple’s M3 and M4 chipsets.

AMD CEO Lisa Su stressed that its new AI chip line aligns with the semiconductor manufacturer’s 30×25 initiative. The firm seeks to minimize AI power consumption by boosting computing node power efficiency by 30x by 2025.

Ryzen AI 300 Nomenclature to Help AMD One-Up Intel

Insiders said AMD renamed its upcoming CPU to Ryzen AI 300 to emphasize its superiority over the Intel Core Ultra 200. Tech specialists speculate that the chipmaker may adopt a 100-numbering scheme for its first processors specially designed for GenAI systems.

However, it will defy industry convention and skip the 100 and 200 numbering nomenclature to jump over its rival’s next-generation AI chips. AI enthusiasts expect a first official look at the new chip at Computex 2024, which is set for early June.

Analysts estimate that Intel will release its renamed Arrow Lake CPUs in the fourth quarter of this year. As a result, AMD plans to launch the Ryzen AI 300 by August to snatch market share before the Core Ultra 200’s release.
