On Monday, Apple announced that its collaboration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT will transform Siri and is expected to be rolled out in the upcoming iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia later this year.
The chatbot’s integration was announced during the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 keynote event. It will also be integrated into the iPhone maker’s systemwide writing features.
Furthermore, ChatGPT premium subscribers can seamlessly connect their accounts to access exclusive features from OpenAI within Apple’s operating systems (OS).
The much-anticipated collaboration comes as the smartphone maker attempts to develop artificial intelligence (AI) features that can compete with those of other major tech firms.
Apple had been in talks with Google and OpenAI to integrate their AI technology into its OS, but the ChatGPT creator has secured the agreement.
Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said they are thrilled to collaborate with Apple to bring its chatbot to their users in a new scheme.
Altman further emphasized the shared commitment of both firms to safety and innovation, assuring the audience that their partnership is driven by a mission to make advanced AI accessible and secure for everyone.
Meanwhile, Apple has announced that OpenAI’s GPT-40 will be the model used for ChatGPT on its devices when iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia are released later this year.
Elon Musk Warns Apple Devices Ban over OpenAI Collab
After Apple announced its plans to collaborate with OpenAI, Elon Musk cautioned that he might ban iOS devices at his companies if the integration persists at the OS level.
Musk stated on X that it’s ridiculous to think Apple cannot develop its own AI but can supposedly guarantee that OpenAI will safeguard your security and privacy.
The multi-billionaire charged the AI firm, which he co-founded in 2015, and Altman in March, claiming that they abandoned the startup’s initial mission to develop technology to benefit humanity and not for profit.
Meanwhile, Musk has started its own xAI startup to rival OpenAI and establish an alternative to the popular chatbot ChatGPT.
