On Wednesday, Apple launched its browser beta version of its Maps service to rival Google Maps’ 19-year dominance.
Apple Maps had previously been accessible only on its devices, benefiting from seamless integration within the Apple ecosystem.
For example, the tech giant’s Maps can send turn-by-turn directions to Apple Watches, a feature not available with Google Maps.
However, by expanding to the web, Apple demonstrates confidence in its location and direction services for users beyond its device owners.
In a recent announcement, Apple unveiled significant updates to Apple Maps. The firm disclosed that users can access directions, discover places with detailed information, including photos and reviews, and order food directly from Maps.
Additionally, users can explore curated Guides to find the best places to eat, shop, and explore in cities worldwide.
This update aims to enhance the overall user experience, making Apple Maps a more comprehensive and versatile navigation tool.
Maps on the Web is available in English and works with Safari and Chrome on Mac and iPad, as well as Chrome and Edge on Windows PCs. Apple intends to expand its support to include more languages, browsers, and platforms.
Since its debut in 2012, Apple Maps has introduced various features, such as detailed city maps, multi-stop routing, cycling directions, EV routing, and offline navigation.
Maps from Apple Updates Roads, 3D Landmark as Olympics Looms
Ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Apple has updated its Maps app with more detailed road markings, trees, and public transit routes.
Custom-designed 3D landmarks for sites like the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and Arc de Triomphe have been added. These updates aim to help locals and visitors navigate the city more efficiently during the Olympics.
Meanwhile, Apple Music also features A Guide to French Music, while Apple News provides curated Olympic coverage, including a medals table and event schedule.
Real-time transit information for the Paris Métro, Réseau Express Régional (RER) trains, tramways, and Parisian Autonomous Transport Administration (RATP) buses is also available.
