Apple May Delay Launch of Next-Generation AirTag to 2025

On Sunday, insiders reported that Apple may delay the release of its second-generation AirTag because of massive stockpiles of the unsold gen-1 version.

At 32 months, the Apple AirTag is relatively old by the company’s standards, which tends to release new versions each year. It became a massive hit shortly after its release, with consumers praising the convenience and peace of mind it provides.

Apple’s tracking item allows users to view its location using the radar function of the Find My app. The product has a built-in speaker, allowing users to instruct the device to play a sound using the app.

Moreover, the ultra-wideband Precision Finding technology displays its exact distance and direction. Owners can also grant access to the AirTag with up to five other Apple devices, ideal for shared items like car keys.

In addition, users can seek help from hundreds of millions of other users to find something they left beyond the tracking range. Using the Find My network, the owner can share the digital signature of their AirTag while maintaining privacy.

An AirTag uses secure Bluetooth technology and does not require a wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) connection. It uses a standard CR2032 lithium 3V coin battery that the user can replace once it runs out after approximately a year.

Insiders predict that Apple will wait for their AirTag inventories to dwindle before launching an updated version. Releasing the second-gen version may cause demand for the gen-1 to plummet, possibly prompting the firm to scrap the latter.

AirTag is One of Apple’s Top 2023 Products

Apple’s AirTag became a billion-dollar product after sales reached $1 billion or 55 million of the device in December 2022, 20 months after its release. They remained one of Amazon’s bestsellers last year, with the single-pack as its all-time best-selling electronics product.

The North American AirTag market stood at $3.88 billion in 2022, following a demand boost caused by the pandemic. Analysts expect the market to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.32% by 2031.

Amazon retained Black Friday-level discounts for its AirTags, with the single-pack selling 17.28% off at $23.99. The four-pack is retailing for $78.99, a 20.21% discount, suggesting the e-commerce giant has a significant stockpile for the coveted Apple product.
