Apple Renames Mixed-Reality Software on Approaching Debut

Apple renamed its mixed-reality software to xrOS as the company ramped up its work, signaling its approaching debut.

The iPhone maker plans to introduce the product next year with third-party software and a dedicated operating system.

Accordingly, the product’s new name was a nod to its capabilities, with XR standing for extended reality. This move from Apple was in preparation for its showdown with Meta’s metaverse project. Furthermore, it was also part of the tech giant’s search for its next big product.

For xrOS’s features, the device was designed to be different from existing models. In particular, the headset’s operating system would offer exclusive versions of core apps, such as Messages and Maps.

Additionally, it would have a software development kit that third parties could use to create tools and games. These features, along with the device, were reportedly being developed by the tech firm’s Technology Development Group.

Before this, job listings from Apple signaled its intention to create its original 3D-based mixed-reality world. Besides, the iPhone maker also enlisted its engineering head to work on the device. Due to this, speculation arose that the new product will have a VR version of FaceTime and virtual collaboration tools.

On Friday, Apple released the iOS 16.1.2 update, which would improve its devices’ security and crash detection features. The upgrade would also enhance the product’s compatibility with wireless carriers.

Depending on the user’s settings, Apple gadgets should install the changes automatically when they become available. However, the tech giant has yet to disclose the nature of the security updates.

Before this, Apple also began beta testing its iOS 16.2, which is expected to be released this month. This new version would have a new Home app architecture, sleep widget, Freeform app, live sports, and much more.

Furthermore, the iPhone maker stated that it would allow users to send reports about bugs and other issues.
