On Tuesday, Apple reportedly revealed that it will switch to an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display for the upcoming iPhone devices in 2025.
According to reports, televisions and phone makers are replacing liquid crystal displays (LCDs) with OLED. This move aims to deliver more vivid colors and sharper contrast, which is ideal for high-definition videos.
However, Japan Nikkei disclosed that the shift will exclude Tokyo’s Sharp Corp and Japan Display from Apple’s handset business.
Furthermore, sources revealed that the tech giant has started placing orders for OLED panels. It will begin for the looming iPhone SE series from China’s BOE Technology and South Korea’s LG Display.
Apple debuted OLED displays on the iPhone X devices released in 2017 and has since shifted to OLEDs for the premium iPhone series.
Moreover, the firm has applied the technology to its newest iPad Pro series, which was launched in May.
Reports revealed that Sharp and Japan Display once held a combined 70.00% share of iPhone panels over a decade. However, they only supplied LCDs for the iPhone SE and did not mass-produce smartphone OLED displays.
