Delta Grapples with Canceling Flights on CrowdStrike Outage

According to reports, Delta canceled 1,250 flights beyond the 3,500 trips it had already dropped.

The tech outage has stranded thousands of Atlanta-based airline passengers across the US, some of whom have rented cars and driven hundreds of miles. At the same time, others would have to wait days for new air trips or cancel flights.

Reports show that CrowdStrike’s software update has triggered systems issues for Microsoft users, including many airlines.

Meanwhile, Delta Airlines has scrapped a third of its scheduled flights and delayed over 44.00%, or 1,700 flights, fighting operational issues following the outage that hit its crew tracking system.

According to the airline’s flight tracking website, there is no timetable for resuming normal operations, and it has already canceled another 305 flights on Monday. Since the July 19 service outage, Delta has already scrapped over 5,000 air trips.

However, other US air carriers have recuperated, while Delta has grappled with returning to normal. Moreover, United Airlines canceled over 266 flights on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta-based airline’s CEO, Ed Bastian, noted that the tech outage has affected its Microsoft Windows systems.

Bastian informed customers that the shutdown disrupted a crew tracking tool, which could not handle the surge of changes.

SkyMiles Program Issued by Delta Due to System Outage

Delta has issued a SkyMiles Program or travel voucher for the passengers affected by the CrowdStrike shutdown on Friday.

The airline has been emailing the impacted customers since Sunday to acknowledge the incident. According to reports, Delta has extended its travel waiver for all passengers booked from July 19 to 21.

Furthermore, it contacted passengers about cancellations and rebooking options via the Fly Delta app and text messages.

The Atlanta-based airline also said it will cover eligible expenses due to flight disruptions, including meal vouchers, hotel accommodation, and land transportation.

Customers affected by canceled or delayed flights can cancel for eCredit or a refund.
