According to reports, Disney is no longer allowing its users to sign up for and buy subscriptions to Hulu or Disney+ via Apple’s App Store.
The decision eliminates any subscription fees the company would have needed to pay the iPhone maker for using in-app purchases.
Moreover, the shift was reportedly noted on Reddit over the weekend, and information is also available on the Disney+ and Hulu websites.
These streaming platforms’ websites revealed that new and returning customers cannot sign up for and pay via Apple. However, existing iPhone maker-billed subscribers are unaffected by the shift.
On the other hand, Hulu and Disney+ users can still watch content on Apple products by signing into their accounts through iOS apps.
The Burbank-based firm now manages its users to its websites to see all available plans and sign up for subscriptions directly.
Meanwhile, Apple charges a 15.00% to 30.00% fee for digital purchases, including subscription services. By eliminating the in-app purchase option for streaming services, Disney can avoid paying this fee and be categorized as a reader app.
However, the streaming platform has not yet commented on the matter.
Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN+ Surges Plan Charges in the US
Reports noted that Disney revealed early last month that prices for Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ ad-supported and add-free plans in the US will rise.
However, the firm has refused to mention that fees for its Disney+ streaming plans will surge in other countries, too.
According to sources, starting on October 17, US subscribers will have to pay extra for any streaming service by the company. For instance, Disney+ with ads will cost $10.00 compared to $8.00 a month, as its ad-free tier is now priced at $16.00, from the previous $14.00 monthly.
Furthermore, Disney disclosed that Duo Basic costs $11.00 with Disney+ and Hulu. Nevertheless, the Duo Premium plan has not received a price hike and remains at $20.00 monthly.
Also, ESPN+ is a dollar more expensive than its previous $11.00 monthly subscription.
