Meta Faces Federal Lawsuits Filed by School Districts

On Friday, Meta Platforms Incorporated must face school districts’ addiction claims, which led to a federal court lawsuit.

Based on reports, the case states that the company purposely designed its applications and platforms to keep young users hooked. Also, algorithms and interactive features were considered to be the root cause.

In line with this, the educational institutions indicated that the effect of these apps contributes to crisis in the mental health of students.

Moreover, the United States (US) District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers announced a ruling denying a request for the dismissal of negligence claims. However, she provided a narrowed scope of allegations that will continue to be pursued.

Prior to the new order, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge declared a decision favoring the tech giant on June 07.

Subsequently, the split decision puts Meta at risk of liability for damages in over 150 cases involving Rogers despite avoiding 600 other cases.

In addition, the US court officer explained that specific parts of the lawsuit are prohibited by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.

More importantly, spokespersons from Meta denied wrongdoing and said the corporation took steps to uphold kids’ safety on the platforms.

Meanwhile, the lawsuit filed by the school district also involved Google, TikTok, and Snap.

Apple, Google Lost to Meta in Phone AI Competition

According to reports, Apple and Google lost to Meta in the race to integrate powerful artificial intelligence (AI) on mobile devices.

The Facebook parent completed the smaller versions of the Llama system, which works on smartphones and tablets. Based on the corporation’s testing, these compressed models can almost match the performance of larger counterparts.

Correspondingly, this achievement of Meta solves the need for massive computing power to handle solid AI.

Conversely, Apple and Google take a more controlled approach to their phone AI advancements. The competitors in the industry still incorporate smart technology into their operating systems.
