MGM Resorts International and Massive Data Breach

Famous American hospitality and entertainment company MGM Resorts International confirmed the data breach that could potentially cost it billions of dollars.

Technology became a crucial part of businesses. Casinos, as well as resorts, are actively using various technologies.

Moreover, in such an industry, providing personal information is a requirement. However, casino operators should protect the personal information of their clients. It is important to mention that the privacy of players and guests are highly confidential.

Recently, MGM Resorts International confirmed a massive data breach. As a result, the information about more than 10.6 million guests was exposed due to this accident.

U.S. law firm Morgan & Morgan filed a formal lawsuit against the casino. This lawsuit attracted a lot of attention as the lawyer of the law firm is John Yanchunis, a known figure in the industry.

Interestingly, Yanchunis represented some of the Yahoo users back in 2013 and 2016, when a data breach affected the company.

Last week, MGM Resorts confirmed that last summer, the company identified unauthorized access to its cloud server. Based on the information provided by MGM Resorts, the breached cloud contained limited information about its previous guests.

Moreover, recently the personal information of the guest was published on a hacking forum. It means that the casino failed to protect their personal information.

Furthermore, the list of affected guests includes celebrities, top officials of major businesses as well as government officials, etc.

In this situation, it is not surprising that Morgan & Morgan filed a lawsuit against the operator. The law firm filed this lawsuit at the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada.

MGM Resorts and the Japanese government

Another news connected with MGM Resorts International comes from Japan. The company wants to open a casino in Osaka, Japan. The Japanese government has to decide which city will host the gambling halls of the chosen company.

There are other cities, as well. For example, Tokyo and Yokohama. However, in the case of Tokyo and Yokohama, companies must comply with integrated resort laws.

Several companies such as the Las Vegas Sands, Melco Resorts & Entertainment as well as Caesars Entertainment, and Galaxy Entertainment also would like to open casinos in Japan.

Chairman and CEO Jim Murren announced that he plans to leave his post. However, he will continue to fulfill his duties until the new CEO replaces him.

THE new CEO should pay more attention to cybersecurity to avoid such accidents in the future.
