Musk Uses Twitter Poll to Decide If He Should Resign as CEO

Tesla Inc. chief executive Elon Musk posted a poll on Twitter over the weekend, asking users and his followers if he should resign as the social media giant’s boss, saying he would respect the poll’s results.

The poll was set to close later Monday, although it was unclear whether Musk would leave his post. About 16.8 million users have participated, with around 57% of the respondents agreeing that the billionaire should step down and nearly 43% saying he should not.

However, polls on the platform are straw polls, making them informal and not based on professional public opinion research. In addition, bot or fake accounts may be able to sign up to cast a vote on the poll.

Musk did not provide information about the date of his departure from Twitter if the poll results favor his resignation.

He only replied, “There is no successor,” to one user’s comment about a potential change in the head of the social media company, saying the question is not finding a chief executive officer (CEO). Instead, the question is finding a CEO who can keep Twitter alive.

In Delaware court last month, Musk stated that that would reduce his time at Twitter and appoint someone else to run the platform over time.

Twitter Prohibits Promotion of Other Social Media Platforms

Prior to Musk’s poll, he tweeted that there would be a vote for significant changes in Twitter’s policy. That was followed by the company announcing that users are now prohibited from freely promoting other social networks on its platform.

Twitter said cross-posting from different social media platforms is still allowed. On the other hand, tweets advertising handles and links to a user’s other social media accounts are now considered a policy breach. The change also prohibits the posting of third-party link aggregators.

According to the company, breaking the new rules will require the user to remove the post or result in their Twitter account being temporarily locked or suspended.

The latest policy is expected to impact content from social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, and Truth Social, to name a few.
