OpenAI Unveils its AI-Powered Search Engine, SearchGPT

OpenAI is launching SearchGPT, an eagerly awaited artificial intelligence (AI) search engine with real-time internet information access.

According to OpenAI spokesperson Kayla Wood, SearchGPT is currently a prototype powered by the GPT-4 models and will initially be available to 10,000 test users.

Wood also mentioned that the firm teams up with third-party partners and utilizes direct content feeds to compile its search results. The ultimate aim is to incorporate these search features directly into ChatGPT.

This OpenAI move could challenge Google, which swiftly added AI features to its search engine to prevent users from switching to rivals.

It also places the AI giant in direct competition with the startup Perplexity, which markets itself as a tool answering engine. Recently, the startup has faced criticism over AI summaries feature that publishers accuse of plagiarizing their content.

Furthermore, OpenAI appears to have learned from past criticism and is taking a different approach.

OpenAI shared that it developed SearchGPT with news partners like The Wall Street Journal, The Associated Press, and Vox Media. Spokesperson Wood stated that news partners gave valuable feedback and that OpenAI continues to seek their input.

The firm asserts that publishers will have control over their presence in OpenAI search features. Although they can opt out of using their content to train OpenAI’s models, they will still appear in search results.

SearchGPT Links Users to Publishers with Cited Links: OpenAI

According to OpenAI’s report, SearchGPT aims to connect users with publishers by prominently citing and linking to them in search results.

The AI giant said that responses include clear, in-line attribution and links, allowing users to see sources and engage with additional results through a sidebar with source links.

OpenAI has launched its new search engine, SearchGPT, as a prototype, strategically managing potential pitfalls.

Meanwhile, by labeling it a model, the company can more easily address wildly incorrect search results, similar to Google’s AI Overviews mistake that suggested using glue on pizza.

Additionally, this approach helps mitigate risks associated with incorrect attributions or accusations of content plagiarism, issues that have previously troubled other AI search engines like Perplexity.
