Palm oil becomes essential for soap production

Today soap has become the new protagonist amid the crisis caused by COVID-19. This cleanser prevents the spread of the virus in the population. In this context, palm oil gains strength, which is considered one of the raw materials for soup manufacturing.

Jens Mesa Dishington, Executive President of Fedepalma, explained that palm oil gives the soap a high resistance to oxidation, a better foam formation, an adequate shine and excellent retention of perfume and aromas, thanks to its versatility and characteristics.

Besides, Dishington recalled the history of Caleb Johnson, launching a toilet soap with olive and palm ingredients in 1898. It was one of the significant skin softeners, bringing together palm and olive, making up the Palmolive soap’s name. The soap is still available for purchase at any supermarket today. However, the company would not have thought of becoming the quintessential example of capitalist growth.

The Colombian palm growing sector concentrates its efforts on delivering the necessary supplies to manufacturing companies of different cleaning products.

Finally, Mesa highlighted that the Colombian palm growing sector works together to overcome, in the best possible way, this situation that the country and the world are currently facing.

Palm oil is 100% Colombian, it is of natural origin, and it comes directly from the palm fruit and therefore produces a lower carbon footprint for the planet.

Palm trees used to grow in Africa. Because of the increasing demand for oil, they are grown in Asia, North America, and South America. The top exporters of the commodity are Indonesia, Malaysia, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Guatemala. Top importers of palm oil are India, China, Pakistan, the Netherlands, and Spain. It is widely used because of high oxidative stability and lower cost.
