Tech Breakthroughs: Photosynthesis, Raman, AI Upskill

Key Points

  • A breakthrough in observing the motion of photosynthesis catalysts, paving the way for artificial photosynthesis.
  • Bruker Corporation acquires Nanophoton, enhancing its research in Raman microscopy.
  • Microsoft CEO announces initiative to skill over 2 million people in India with AI capabilities.

Scientists from Okayama University and their colleagues have achieved a significant breakthrough. They have deepened our understanding of the complex movements of a “distorted chair” shaped catalyst involved in photosynthesis. Firstly, they used visible light to initiate reactions in photosynthetic complex II. Next, they captured the process with femtosecond X-ray free-electron lasers. Consequently, they have gained crucial insights into how water molecules split into hydrogen ions and electrons. This research was published in Nature. It not only enhances our understanding of natural photosynthesis but also establishes a promising foundation. Specifically, it aids in designing catalysts for artificial photosynthesis. Ultimately, this could potentially transform energy production.

Enhancing Molecular Microscopy

The acquisition of Nanophoton Corporation by Bruker Corporation significantly boosts molecular microscopy, especially in the field of research Raman microscopy. Based in Osaka, Japan, Nanophoton brings two decades of pioneering experience and a robust portfolio of advanced Raman microscopes to Bruker’s molecular microscopy offerings. This move aims to provide fast, flexible, and sensitive Raman microscopy systems worldwide, supporting research and development in life sciences, biopharma, materials science, and more. Incorporating Nanophoton’s technologies should enhance capabilities in studying semiconductors, nanomaterials, pharmaceuticals, and other areas.
