According to Nick Bunker, “In 2022, many people expected a reduction in openings this large would have boosted unemployment much more.” Historically, such a dramatic decline in job openings without a corresponding rise in unemployment is unprecedented.

Hiring has not been immune to the cooling trend either. In March, hiring fell by 281,000, mirroring the decline in job openings. In March, layoffs and discharges fell by 155,000 to a rate of 1.0%, down from 1.1% in February and just shy of the all-time low of 0.9%. In March, the ratio stood at 1.32, a significant decline from 2.03 in March 2022, which marked the peak of labour shortages.
