YouTube Develops New Tools to Secure Creators from Deepfakes

On Thursday, YouTube revealed it is developing new features to protect its creators from artificial intelligence (AI) copycats.

According to reports, the first feature is called synthetic-singing identification technology. This tool will permit artists and creators to automatically determine and control YouTube content that copies their singing voices using gen-AI.

The video-streaming platform will integrate the tool into its Content ID system and schedule a pilot program next year to test its effectiveness.

Meanwhile, the announcement comes after YouTube’s promise last November to allow music labels the right to remove AI replicas of artists.

The swift advancement and increased accessibility of gen-AI music tools have raised concerns among artists about potential issues like plagiarism, imitation, and copyright violations.

A separate tool is also being developed to recognize deepfakes of YouTube creators, actors, musicians, and athletes. However, the feature is still in development, and the platform’s anticipated launch date has not yet been disclosed.

YouTube’s VP of Creator Products, Amjad Hanif, shared that there should be equality between creativity and securing creators’ intellectual property, which involves their likeness.

Furthermore, the platform is creating options for creators to control third-party AI use of their content, which further details will be available soon.

Deepfakes to Combat by YouTube as Election Looms

YouTube has revised its guidelines to address deepfake threats, responding to creator concerns and election-related AI misuse.

According to reports, worries over gen-AI abuse might be heightened during election season, when platforms should be the threshold for political deepfakes.

This year, Google and YouTube have intensified efforts against hoax materials, focusing on election misinformation and automatically removing them from their platforms.

Meanwhile, the video-streaming platform prepared for a surge in deepfakes in July by updating its guidelines to allow the removal of realistic likenesses.

Furthermore, the individuals affected must request the removal, and as YouTube introduces more anti-deepfake tools, this remains an empowering option.
