Dow jumps 185 points on gains for shares

Shares of American Express and UnitedHealth are posting strong returns Thursday afternoon, lifting the Dow Jones Industrial Average into positive territory. The Dow DJIA, -1.58% is trading 185 points, or 0.8%, higher, as shares of American Express AXP, -1.30% and UnitedHealth UNH, -1.46% contribute about half of the blue-chip gauge’s intraday rally. American Express’s shares have gained $4.59, or 5.9%, while those of UnitedHealth have risen $13.06, or 4.7%, combining for a roughly 121-point bump for the Dow. Other components contributing significantly to the gain include JPMorgan Chase JPM, -1.96%, Cisco CSCO, -1.01%, and Merck MRK, -2.72%. A $1 movement in any of the Dow’s 30 parts results in a 6.86-point swing.

Raytheon Technologies Corp., Travelers, share losses lead Dow’s 189-point drop.

 

The DJIA is falling Thursday morning with Raytheon Technologies Corp. and Travelers’ shares seeing the largest drops for the price-weighted average. Shares of Raytheon Technologies Corp. RTX, +0.06% and Travelers TRV, -2.13% have contributed to the index’s intraday decline, as the Dow DJIA, -1.58% was most recently trading 189 points lower (-0.8%). Raytheon Technologies Corp.’s shares have declined $1.61, or 3.0%, while those of Travelers are off $2.43 (2.7%), combining a roughly 28-point drag on the Dow. Walgreens Boots WBA, -1.56%, IBM IBM, -1.04%, and 3M MMM, -0.59% is also contributing significantly to the decline. A $1 movement in any of the Dow’s 30 parts equates to a 6.86-point swing.

Boeing’s shares have dropped $5.77, or 4.8%, while those of Travelers are off $3.68, or 4.1%, combining for a roughly 65-point drag on the Dow. Raytheon Technologies Corp. RTX, +0.06%, Dow Inc. DOW, -2.99%, and Exxon Mobil XOM, -3.08% contribute significantly to the decline. A $1 movement in any one of the 30 components of the index equates to a 6.86-point swing.
