Elon Musk Launches AI Chatbot ‘Grok’ to Vie with OpenAI

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has revealed a new generative artificial intelligence (AI) to rival Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Google.

Musk’s AI startup Explainable Artificial Intelligence (xAI) unveiled Grok, its first large language model (LLM) integrated into X that is expected to challenge AI chatbots of OpenAI, Google, and Meta Platforms.

Grok offers real-time access to information through X, potentially providing it with more advantages than other models, which primarily rely on older internet data files.

According to Musk, the chatbot enjoys sarcasm and answers with a bit of humor. The Tesla CEO hopes that Grok’s added personality will stand out over the crowded AI market.

xAI said its LLM using social media platform X allows it to answer questions that most AI models may have rejected.

Grok is currently running as a prototype and is only available to a limited number of users.

AI companies, which can produce humanlike text, code, and imagery through their technological resources, have raised billions this year from investors participating in the industry that enthusiasts believed could be as innovative as the internet.

However, others are concerned about a growing tech bubble, given that the technology’s commercialization is still in the early phase.

xAI’s release of a functional model with only two months of training demonstrated how newcomers are starting to consume the significant lead of OpenAI, which launched ChatGPT nearly a year earlier.

Grok will be available to X’s new Premium+ service for a monthly subscription of $16 after it finishes the testing period.

Separately, Musk aims to boost X following his purchase of the platform in 2022, as advertisers expressed concern over the content moderation changes affecting their revenue.

Musk’s xAI to Integrate Into X

Elon Musk has disclosed that xAI will be integrated into X and also be offered as a standalone app.

The move came as part of the startup’s objective to create AI tools that help people with their search for understanding and knowledge.

Musk debuted xAI in July, calling it a “maximum truth-seeking AI” that would rival Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing AI. The company comprised former employees of OpenAI, Google’s DeepMind, and Microsoft.

Musk’s X platform and xAI are two separate companies, but they work collaboratively. The AI startup also works with electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla and other firms.
