Samsung Unveils AI-Powered Galaxy S24 In Push to Rival Apple

South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has revealed its new premium smartphone lineup, equipped with various artificial intelligence (AI) features to rival Apple Inc.’s dominance in the global smartphone market.

An earlier-than-expected launch from Samsung introduced the latest Galaxy S24 smartphone series coming in the base, Plus, and Ultra versions. The models will retail for $700, $999, and $1,299, respectively.

Prior to the introduction, the company presented the new devices in London earlier this week.

Samsung has described the Galaxy S24’s two-way voice translation as its notable AI capability, stating that its new smartphone is the first to offer such a feature.

Available in 13 different languages, the on-device AI function is able to translate foreign language calls simultaneously in real-time.

The firm has also demonstrated how the phone can edit images and search items through AI. The device can add backgrounds to photos with ‘generative editing,’ while its ‘circle-to-search’ feature encircles a part of an image or text to search for it on Google.

Other functions include AI translation and a message tone changer. Samsung’s flagship device can also summarize and translate voice records using AI.

The Galaxy S24 range is set to start selling on January 31.

AI-Packed Galaxy S24 Debuts as Apple Dominates

The launch of Galaxy S24 comes as the Suwon-based electronics maker challenged Apple after the iPhone creator surpassed Samsung in smartphone shipments for 2023.

Preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) showed that the Cupertino-based company shipped 234.6 million units the year earlier, a 3.7% year-over-year rise from 226.3 million units in 2022.

The iPhone shipments represented 20.1% of the world market last year.

Apple’s 2023 shipments beat the 226.6 million units of Samsung, which accounted for a 19.4% market share, allowing the US firm to take the top spot from the South Korean company as the no. 1 phone seller.

Samsung has held the leading position in the smartphone market for 13 years prior to the data.

Amid the competition, global shipments reaching almost 1.76 billion in the previous year were at a ten-year low, according to IDC.
