WhatsApp Tests Protect IP Address Option for Calls

Instant messaging platform WhatsApp rolled out a Protect Internet Protocol (IP) address beta feature for enhanced user privacy.

Users of the app’s beta can now access the new toggle button named “Protect IP address in calls”. When toggled on, it adds an extra layer of security by encrypting your location and preventing call eavesdropping.

The new feature works by relaying calls through WhatsApp servers instead of connecting the caller directly to the recipient. Through end-to-end encryption, no one, not even the instant messenger, can listen in on users’ conversations.

However, its toggle description notes that turning on the IP address protection can slightly reduce the call quality. Beta users can view details of the new option in the recently added Advanced sub-section of the Privacy settings.

Meta Platforms, WhatsApp’s owner, said the new feature proves its commitment to improving the cybersecurity of its platforms. With improved online safeguards, users can be more confident in networking, particularly when having calls with unknown contacts.

Currently, only users who have downloaded and installed WhatsApp’s beta version can experience the feature. The company plans to make it available to everyone in the future but has yet to give a release date.

With 2.70 billion monthly active users in over 180 countries, WhatsApp has become a significant target for hackers and scammers. Meta expressed confidence that the protect IP address feature would serve as an effective deterrent for such cybercriminals.

IP Address Veil Leads New Set of WhatsApp Features

WhatsApp has been working on other innovations besides the new protect IP address on calls option. Recently, it has revealed its revamped interface, which features new, modernized icons, to a select group of beta testers.

Additionally, its developers have been creating the “Secret Code” functionality for locked chats and adding new shortcuts. In mid-September, the app launched a new feature that allows users to follow celebrities and brands for updates.

WhatsApp, however, will stop working on older Android and iOS smartphones on October 24. Ending its service for older phone models will allow the company to focus on new features for an improved user experience.
